The World Out of Tune Festival (W.O.O.T.) draws together artists who celebrate harmony through a variety of musical styles but who are all unified in one fundamental ideal: keeping in tune with Nature. We want to offer to our audiences the experience of hearing music which is purely "in tune." Virtually all of the music we are exposed to on a daily basis uses the same 12 notes of the man-made tuning system called 12-Tone Equal temperament. Most people are not even aware that 12-Equal distorts the pure notes of Nature's Harmonic Series nor are they aware there is an alternative. We want to challenge the long held perspective in our musical culture that being out of tune with Nature is normal and reveal to people how beautiful and exciting this "new" musical territory truly is. ![]()
One of the projects featured in the 2001 WOOT Festival in New York City was Jon Catler's Evolution for Electric Guitar and Orchestra. Since the premiere of this work at the inception of WOOT, in June 0f 2001, the Festival and it's world-renowned roster of performing artists, musicians and composers has helped to expand the consciousness of the musical and artistic community and inspire dialogue about Natural Music. Produced in conjunction with MELA Foundation, the WOOT Festival also features the work of La Monte Young - one of the world's leading experts on Natural Music.

MELA Foundation, founded in May 1985, is a not-for-profit interdisciplinary arts organization designed to encourage creative work in the fields of music, the visual arts, and other media; to explore the applications of advanced technologies to artistic expression; and to present major contemporary works and extended duration art installations that eliminate the boundaries between artistic disciplines. MELA has produced and organized more than 100 events since its inception, including performances, exhibitions, installations, recordings, film screenings, video and radio presentations, teaching, research and publications. The name MELA references the Sanskrit word mela, which has the meanings of consonance, harmonizing, combining, gathering together, and is etymologically related to milana: to tune. In addition, MELA forms the acronym for Music Eternal Light Art.
